If you find water under the kitchen sink, stop using the sink and any connected appliance that may be contributing. If it is safe, move stored items away and contain a small drip while arranging help. Where the water appears—and whether it continues with the faucet off—can provide useful clues, but it does not establish the cause.
Start by Limiting Further Damage
Keep away from wet sockets, wiring or a disposal unit. Do not reach through standing water to unplug equipment. A spreading leak near electricity needs urgent attention from the appropriate professionals.
If a clearly identified fixture shut-off valve is dry, accessible and operates normally, closing it can isolate the faucet’s supply. Do not force a seized or corroded valve. Isolating the faucet will not necessarily stop a dishwasher or shared drain from leaking. In an apartment, notify building management and avoid operating shared valves without authorization.
What the Timing Can Tell You
- Water appears during draining: the drain connections, trap or sink outlet may need inspection.
- Water continues with the faucet off: a pressurized supply connection is one possibility; residual water or another connected fixture can also confuse the picture.
- Water appears around the faucet base or cabinet top: it may be tracking down from above rather than starting at the lowest wet connection.
Use what you have already observed. Do not keep running water to recreate a leak that is spreading or difficult to contain. Water follows surfaces, so the place where a drop falls may be some distance from its source.
Avoid Turning a Small Leak Into a Larger One
Do not assume that a wrench will solve it. A damaged seal, deteriorated supply hose or corroded fitting needs a different response from a loose connection. Over-tightening can damage components, and a temporary wrap does not establish that the plumbing is safe to use.
Leave dismantling and uncertain repairs to a plumber, particularly where valves do not isolate reliably. A bucket can contain a small drip temporarily, but it is not a reason to leave an active leak unattended.
Useful Information When You Call
Describe when you first noticed the water, whether it appears with the faucet off, whether a dishwasher was running and whether there is dampness outside the cabinet. A clear photograph of the whole under-sink arrangement plus the wet area can help explain the problem. Do not move pipework to get a better picture.
